Gran Turismo is a legendary PlayStation exclusive real car racing simulator series carefully curated and spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This year of 2022 marks the 7th installment of the series being released as a cross gen game for the PS4, PS4pro and PS5. So in this particular review I just want to give a brief account of what I have just experienced which will set a precedent in your mind as the reader to probably give you a sense of direction to your expectations. Bear in mind its not a full account of the game at all as we all have just started playing it. Lets find out my brief account of this masterpiece.
Graphics
Its easy to say this game looks spectacular locked up in native 4k having two graphical options which are framerate mode and raytracing mode. When you choose framerate mode you get a 60 fps 4k without RT in most cases but to some degree I would assume that as and when needed RT might shift on and off within this mode. I understand experts on the internet are saying "its not even there" in Performance mode but lets take the exact wording from the game developers themselves first regarding performance mode : "The highest possible frame rate will be used throughout the game. Certain other effects including Ray Tracing, which uses a lot of resources, will be disabled or simplified. Ray Tracing will be enabled in certain 3D scenes and in Photo Mode.” There the word "simplified" suggesting a partial showcasing of RT even if its in Performance Mode. I did see scenarios very much similar to RT mode not a big difference at all but even better response times.
The second mode being Raytracing mode: “Ray Tracing will be enabled in race replays and 3D scenes. However, Ray Tracing will be disabled in sections where response times are important.” So RT presence will be largely involved but not enough to hurt the performance when required. So in conclusion 4k 60 Performance mode has at the most no RT only as dictated by the software and hardware within the confines of the developer predeterminations which we cant easily pick out. RT mode largely consists of RT but disabling as an when it will cause an impact on the games performance. Overall judging by what I saw I would recommend RT mode to tap into that special lighting which sets you apart from the PS4 version. Its not a fast pace shooter game so I did not see the need for 60fps but the choice is yours.
Lastly to be honest the graphics are not a big leap from the PS4 but a finer touch when playing it on the PS5. I cant help but think its limited due to the cross gen nature as PS4 was a priority during development. So if you have played Forza Horizon before you get that lack of a big deal e.g FH4 and FH5 minimal difference.
Gameplay
Combined with the dual sense this game goes even a step further in terms of the feel. Distinct vibrations are felt as per situation for example when turning you feel that tire grip sensation, when going off track your controller makes you feel you are off track, hard to put in words but best felt. Another example is when a car turns and moves the chassis moves in a way showing that weight distribution as your car tires screech past a curve. I have not much to say but that it aims for real life car physics nothing short of that and it does deliver very well.
Menu presentation and modes
I will say I have not gone through much here however the menu is very snappy and well presented with elegance and speed thanks to the PS5 SSD. You don't wait at all everything happens in less than a second making it much better than the experience I had with GT on PS3. It was really slow there but good game still. One might ask what has this game in store for me, what does it have to offer? Well there are a considerable amount of activities for you that give a sense of purpose. For example the GT cafe whereby you are assigned tasks to acquire cars through racing certain tracks across the globe in order to unlock them. Each race has a particular class of cars required for it e.g. you cant just use a fast car versus slow entry level hatchbacks. You get those interesting license tests that I so love which are some serious nostalgia here where you need to obtain these licenses horn your skills and be able to participate in certain races. I myself have much to explore but it has a very good rewarding experience from a variety of modes and tasks I encountered. The game envelopes itself to you slowly that even if you are a first timer you don't feel overwhelmed. Myself I last played GT5 on PS3 and coming to this I felt at home in an instant.
The bad
The game needs constant internet connection to play not properly but actually for you to play which is a bummer indeed. keep that in mind if you intend to purchase it.
Conclusion
Its a game best played by fans of the series as opposed to anything else. If you enjoy Forza games like Horizon you might find this limited. If you enjoy Forza Motorsport 7 you will certainly enjoy this since both are track based games. Its clearly not a big graphical leap which kind of disappointed me as I was expecting much but its still beautiful to behold. Regardless GT7 remains the King of ALL car racing games particularly in the aspect of "real car racing simulation" nothing bests it for me. Worth the money yes indeed and as for the rest be sure to experience it with me every time on our Twitch account (you will find link icon on the top right corner of the homepage) as we still have l much to uncover. enjoy
